    JANUARY 16, 2026
    RULES FOR INDOOR BOCCE

    The Object:

Each team has four bocce balls to throw.  The object of the game is to end play with your team’s bocce balls closest to the pallino (a small white ball about the size of a golf ball).

    Teams:

Teams are made up of four players.  Two players from each team will play from each end of the court.

    The Match:

Each match will consist of four games.  The first game will begin with the flip of a coin between the captains from each team. The winner of the coin flip will choose green or red balls for their team for the match and determine who will throw the first ball.  The team that went second in the first game will begin the second game.

    Play the Game:
The game begins with the throwing of the pallino.  The pallino must come to rest beyond the midpoint of the court and not touching any walls.  Teams will alternate the throwing of the pallino.

A thrown bocce ball NEED NOT come to rest beyond the midpoint of the court. All balls other then Dead Balls (see below) are eligible to earn points.  After the first ball is thrown, that team steps aside and does not roll again until the opposing team has either gotten one of its bocce balls closer to the pallino or has thrown all of its balls. The team whose bocce ball is closest to the pallino is called "inside" and the opposing team "outside".  Whenever a team gets inside, it steps aside and lets the outside team roll.  The team outside throws until it beats (not ties) the opposing ball.  This continues until both teams have used all their bocce balls (a total of 8, 4 from each team).

    A) If a player rolls the wrong colored ball, simply replace it with the correct color when the ball comes to rest.

    B) If a player rolls out of turn the opposing team at its option may leave everything, including the thrown ball, exactly where it is or may return any moved balls to their approximate original positions and remove the thrown ball from play.

    C) If a ball is moved before all 8 balls are played, the opposing team replaces the ball to the approximate original position.

    D) Players need not alternate throws. Consecutive or alternating throws by teammates shall be at the option of the players.

    Scoring:

Three points are given for the ball closest to the pallino.  Two points for the next closest ball and one point for the third closest to the pallino.  If at the end of any game any of the balls are equidistant from the pallino, the points for those balls will be split. The next game then begins from the opposite end of the court.  Captains of each team are responsible for reporting the score for each game to the score keeper.  Each team’s points for each game are recorded on the score sheet.  The total points won for the four games are your team’s total points for the match.

Your team does not “win or lose” any match.  Your objective is to score as many points as possible.  At the end of four matches, the highest point getters in each division will advance to a four-team playoff.

    Dead Balls:
If a player's bocce ball (without first hitting the pallino or another ball) makes contact with the back board the bocce ball is considered a dead ball on impact and is removed from play until the end of the game.
If a bocce ball after hitting the backboard strikes a stationary bocce, that stationary bocce shall be replaced in its original position. The thrown ball is removed from play.

    Pallino:

Once the pallino has been validly put into play, it remains in play even if it hits the backboard. However, if the pallino is knocked out of the court the game will be restarted.

    Foul Line:

The player may step on, but should not step over the foul line before releasing the pallino or bocce ball.  Players should stand outside the clay court area when playing.

    Shooting:

Shooting is lofting the ball in the air beyond the center of the court. Shooting is allowed if the thrown ball hits the ground before hitting the ball. If the thrown ball does not hit the ground first, everything goes back to its approximate original position. The thrown ball is out of play.

    Disputes:

The teams playing will referee their own game. Any dispute which cannot be resolved by the team captains shall be decided by the score keeper as a member of the Krewe of Italia Italiana Bocce Committee.  Upon his/her decision the game shall continue.  All measurements should be made from the closest point on the bocce ball to the closest point on the pallino.

    Protests:

A protest will be considered valid only if the opposing captain is notified at the time of the dispute (before the next game begins) and the game is officially recognized as being played under protest.  Any protesting team will be subject to intense public humiliation as this is just for fun.

    Forfeits:
If a team forfeits any game, they forfeit all games.  We will endeavor to find a substitute team to play the matches.

Our float is now located at Stepp's Towing - 5116 Shadowlawn Avenue.   Stepp's Towing's official bead drop off days:

Required releases and wristbands for parade participation will be available and given prior to boarding the bus at the Italian Club. If you are using other transportation to the parade, it is your responsibility to coordinate obtaining wristbands and signing the required releases.  For security purposes, no one without wristbands will be admitted into the controlled staging area.  This is a Children's Gasparilla Parade rule and there will be no exceptions.

    NON-KREWE MEMBER GUESTS:

Guests are welcome to attend if they are members of the Italian Club. The guest fee for non-krewe members is $50.00. Guests must register through our website and use this code 4JMYIQO7.

    HOW DO I GET THERE:

The Krewe will provide bus transportation to and from the parade through Assured Transportation. Information regarding busing to and from staging will be emailed early January 2026.

    WHERE DO I PARK:

There is paid parking available behind Gaspar’s Grotto, behind the Italian Club and either of the two City parking garages.  There will likely be event pricing for parking as well as time constraints.  City parking and the parking garages will be the best option.  City parking is behind Carmine’s and Zydeco.  The closest parking garage is Centro Ybor, 1500 E. 5th Avenue.  Please be aware of any parking charges as well as the length of time allotment permitted.  We will not be returning to Ybor until 6:00PM or later.  This is just an estimate and not a guarantee. THE PARADE:

The Parade begins at 4:00 PM and will end at approximately 6:00PM.

Hot dogs, snacks, and water will be provided.

THIS IS AN ALCOHOL-FREE EVENT. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE.

    SAFETY:
